WATER QUALITY AND PERIODICITY OF PHYTOPLANKTONIC ALGAE IN CHAMBAL TAL, GWALIOR, MADHYA PRADESH .....

For a year, from January 1989 to December 1989, a study of the seasonal fluctuation of phytoplanktonic algae in connection to water quality in Chambal tal, located on Fort, Gwalior, was conducted. The alkaliphilic nature and meroeuthermal state of the tank water were disclosed by the physico-chemical features. Planktonic algae from the families Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Dinophyceae were identified. Phytoplankton peaks were seen during the study, with the late monsoon peak dominated by Chlorophyceae, the late winter early summer peak containing members of all groups roughly equally, and the late summer peak dominated by Cyanophyceaen algae.

The current water body was found to be significantly eutrophic when the Nygaard and Palmer indexes were applied.
