Vascular Plug Embolization in Ilio-Caval Arteriovenous Fistula – A Case Report | Asian Journal of Me

Abdominal arteriovenous fistula (AAVF) is a life-threatening condition caused mostly by trauma. An ilio-caval arteriovenous fistula is a form of AAVF (ICAVF). ICAVF is a life-threatening disorder that need treatment. Although open surgery and endovascular stenting are the preferred interventions, they may not be appropriate for all patients. In certain cases, where open surgery is not an option, vascular plugs can help alleviate heart failure caused by an ilio-caval fistula.

Case Report: We present the case of a 35-year-old woman who developed ICAVF as a result of lumbar disc surgery. Because of the fistula, she had right lower limb ischemia and right heart failure. An early attempt to stent and interpose graft over the fistula failed. A other option Instead, an Amplatzer Vascular Plug (AVP) was used, which proved to be effective. The patient made a full recovery after the intervention, with the majority of her problems resolved.

Conclusion: AVP is an alternate treatment for individuals with abdominal arteriovenous fistula who have failed traditional endovascular graft implantation. AVP is a therapeutic option to consider in a restricted set of patients since it is a safer and more efficient approach.
