THE CHROMOSOMES OF MAN AND APES : EVOLUTION AND COMPARISON| BIONATURE
Comparative data on the chromosomes of humans and big apes is presented in this publication. Over the last two decades, a number of methodologies have been used to study the chromosomes of Homo, Pan, Gorilla, and Pongo. Many karyological traits in Pan, Gorilla, and Man are indicative of their recent split from a common ancestor. A variety of other hypotheses about the precise sequence of speciation events have been investigated. Despite the fact that the chimp is typically thought to be Man's closest ancestor, the chromosomal data presented here reveals that Man is equally distant from both Gorilla and Pan. This idea should be treated with caution, as strong findings will have to wait for a greater knowledge of how chromosomes are arranged and how this affects gene expression.
