TAXONOMIC STUDY OF MESOSTIGMATID MITES ASSOCIATED WITH STORED PRODUCTS IN HISAR (HARYANA), INDIA....

Surveys were undertaken in Hisar (Haryana) from 1999 to 2003 to determine the presence of mesostigmatid mite fauna connected with stores. The mites found in this study are divided into four families, six genera, and seven species. Androlaelaps theseus (Zumpt), Haemolaelaps ovalis Costa, Hypoaspis aculeifer Canestrini, and Hypoaspis sardoa Berlese from the Laelapidae family, Ornithonyssus nitedulae Costa from the Macronyssidae family, Phytoseius sp. from the Phytoseiida A key to identifying mites has been included in the text. The most harmful mite in stores is L. parasiticus, which is responsible for bulk spoiling. Ornithonyssus nitedulae is a blood-feeding mite that feeds on the blood of rodents and birds that enter stores, posing a health risk to store and godown personnel. Other mites seen are mostly free-living, feeding on hazardous mites, fungi, and other organisms found in the stored environment. Three of the seven species identified are new to India, while the other six are unique to Haryana.
