Studies on Seed-Borne Fungi Associated with the Seeds of Three Acacia species by Using Nutrient Agar

The goal of this study was to look at the seed-borne fungi found in the seeds of three key Acacia species: Acacia senegal (Hashab), Acacia nilotica (Sunt), and Acacia mellifera (Kitir). Eight seed samples of these species were gathered from North Kordofan State, White Nile State (Jalahat), and Blue Nile State in the Sudan (Damazine). The growing-on tests were carried out in a greenhouse. In addition, various laboratory procedures for detecting seed-borne fungus were used, such as dry examination and nutrient agar tests. Nine species of seed-borne fungus were isolated and identified. Seed-borne fungi were found in high numbers, with 90 percent and 56 percent contamination of Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus, respectively. A. nidulans, Alternaria alternate, Curvularia lunata, Rhizopus sp., Stumphilium sp., Penicillium sp., and Cladopsporium sp. were among the less common fungus found. The growing-on tests found no signs of a virus or sickness. Few discoloured seeds were found during the dry seed screening. The percentage of germination failure was also closely related to seed contamination, according to the findings. The findings also revealed that pre-sowing treatments of Acacia seeds are required to increase seedling establishment.
