SOME OF MY REMINISCENSES OF PROFESSOR J.B.S. HALDANE | BIONATURE

Haldane finished his plenary talk on genetics at the Eleventh International Congress of Genetics in The Hague, Netherlands, in September 1963 "With a few observations, The Implications of Genetics to Human Society". "Finally, I'd like to make an appeal for global human genetics research. It should, in my opinion, be mostly undertaken on their themes by persons of the same race and tradition. India has numerous drawbacks. The registration of births, marriages, and deaths is incomplete, and laboratory facilities are inadequate. However, there are benefits that outweigh the disadvantages. I'll start with a simple one. The majority of Indian guys' body surfaces, as well as most women's feet, are available to examination. Ajit Ray, an anthropological by training, has recently joined me. I suggested that he test the colour vision of the locals. But it was clear that I had taught him a thing or two about genetics. He detected three pedigrees with a foot deformity defined by a small fourth toe, due to an incompletely penetrant autosomal dominant that shortens the fourth metatarsus, in his first three weeks, aside from evaluating colour vision.
