Sexual Behavioural Activities of Purebred Landrace Boars under Different Mating Regimens | Asian....

A study was undertaken at the Swine Production Farm, LPM Section, IVRI, Izatnagar, India, to see how different mating regimens affected the expression of sexual behavioural activities in purebred Landrace boars. Six seemingly healthy (Age: 8.50.5 months) purebred Landrace boars were randomly mated to 18 purebred Landrace gilts using an outdoor hand mating technique in three separate treatment groups, namely single mating (T1), double mating (T2), and triple mating (T3) during a single oestrus of the gilts. All of the boars had equal libido scores before treatment. The presence, frequency, and length of the boars' behavioural actions were manually recorded in all mating sessions (average duration of 19.501.00 minutes) using specific data coding sheets. Nosing was the most common pre- and post-coital behavioural activity (2.610.16 and 1.650.14, respectively). During the mating sessions, an average of 1.260.09 successful mounts were obtained after an average of 3.350.32 total mount attempts. When compared to T1 and T2, T3 had a considerably (P0.05) higher number of mount attempts during copulation. The average mount time was 5.170.32 minutes, and the average intromission time was 4.100.31 minutes. Except for the number of mount attempts, there was no significant difference between the groups in the frequency and length of pre-coital and post-coital sexual behavioural activity in purebred Landrace boars.
