SELECTIVE ADVANTAGE OF B-CHOROMOSOMES IN PEARL MILLET, PENNISETUM TYPHOIDES | BIONATURE

The response of B-containing and non-B-containing pearl millet plants to one of the environmental stress situations, population density (seeds seeded in five densities: 5, 25, 50, 75, and 100), was investigated. As a control, a ‘standard population' was kept. The experiment revealed that zero B-plants had an advantage in unfavourable density conditions, but lower density conditions favoured B-plants. Distinct B-containing plants appeared to have different responses to seeding density. This research supports the theory that in pearl millet, plants with fewer Bs have a selective advantage.
