Regulation of Garlic Bulb Dormancy | Asian Journal of Research and Review in Agriculture

Garlic bulb dormancy is the last stage of bulb life, and it helps to keep bulbs functioning as vegetative reproduction organs in less-than-ideal growing conditions. Garlic bulbs (Allium sativum L.) are dormant, meaning they will not sprout. The dormancy of the bulb is broken and sprout growth begins when the time of postharvest storage is extended. The breaking of the garlic bulb's dormancy and the onset of sprout growth are accompanied by a number of biochemical changes, the majority of which are detrimental to the nutritional and processing properties of garlics. The control mechanisms of temperature and gibberellins have been postulated to have a crucial role in bulb dormancy regulation. The role of low temperature and gibberellic acid in bulb dormancy breaking has been reviewed and addressed in this review.
