In the red blood cells of patients with Down's syndrome and non-mongoloid mental retardation (MR), levels of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured and compared to normal controls. The levels of 2,3-DPG represented as moles/gHb differed significantly across the three groups.

When 2,3-DPG was expressed as moles/ml red blood cells, however, these significant variations vanished. In the three groups, there were also significant differences in haemoglobin concentrations and MCHC. There were no differences in GSH levels across the three groups.
