QUANTITATIVE STUDIES OF ROOT DEVELOPMENT OF JUTE IN RELATION TO SOIL TYPES AND MOISTURE REGIMES ....

Corchorus capsularis (cv. CVL-1) and Corchorus olitorius (cv. 0-4) root development in three soil types was studied throughout a range of moisture regimes. The length of the individual components of the root system (main lateral, 1st and 2nd laterals, etc.) as well as the number of branches and root volume were measured. CVL-1 had considerably (P = 0-05) longer total root length, root volume, and number of laterals than 0-4 in all soil types when waterlogged (WL). In all soil types, the bottom portion of the 0-4 root was rotting. At FC, both cultivars had significantly larger total root length, root volume, and number of laterals than dry treatments (P = 0.05). At 20 percent moisture in FC, 0-4 plauts generated considerably (P = 0.05) more lateral roots than CVL-1 and finally showed maximal root volume in this treatment.
