POSTNATAL HISTOCHEMICAL AND ISOENZYMATIC PATTERNS OF THE ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE IN THE BRAINSTEM OF ..

Postnatal acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7.) alterations in rat brainstem were examined using histochemical and isoenzymatic techniques in rats aged 0, 12, 21, and 90 days. Karnovasky and Roots' direct colouring approach was used to stain brain slices and gels (1964). Histochemical investigations revealed that the enzyme intensity of individual nuclei varies from infancy to adulthood. AChE isoenzymes detected in brain samples (0 to 90 days) were distinguished by a shifting pattern and differential staining. The isoenzyme pattern indicates that AChE exists in numerous molecular forms that may be expressed in distinct cell populations depending on the stage of development and differentiation of the nerve components.
