PHYTOLITHS OF FERNS III : IN HIMALAYAN HORSETAIL AND SOME FERNS | BIONATURE

The phytolith morphology of Equisetum diffusum's base, stem, leaf, and cone, as well as the leaf and spike of four eusporangiate fern species and 23 leptosporangiate fern species, was investigated. Nearly triangular, cylindrical, square or rectangular, and amorphous morphologies were common. Plates resembling phytoliths were discovered in many species, each with its own characteristics. Six Vittaria species have phytoliths that looked like Spicular cells. SEM analysis of E. diffusum silicification patterns revealed knob-like and ridge-like deposits on leaf and stem surfaces.
