PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND FATTY ACID COMPOSITION OF OILS AND PHOSPHOLIPIDS FROM SUBABUL..

By using Gas-liquid Chromatography, the physico-chemical characteristics, fatty acid composition, and total phospholipids of oils from Subabul, Ritha, Watermelon, and Muskmelon seeds from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra State were investigated (GLC).

Seeds had oil content of 9.8, 30.1, 43.4, and 41.4 percent, respectively. The oils possessed refractive indexes of 1.4736, 1.4723, and 1.4651, acid values of 3.8, 7.3, 4.8, and 6.8, iodine values of 116.8, 90.1, 1193, 120.8, saponification values of 193.3, 188.7, 195.3, 199.9, and unsaponifiable matter of 0.71, 0.88, 0.68, and 0.63 percent, respectively.

The primary fatty acids found in oils and their total phospholipids were palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, with low levels of C20, C22, and unidentified fatty acids. Ritha oil had a high concentration of C20 acids.
