MUTATION GENETIC STUDIES IN ONION II. INDUCED VARIABILITY IN QUANTITATIVE TRAITS AND MORPHOLO.......

Physical (gamma rays) and chemical (EMS, DES, and Sodium azide) mutagens were used separately and in combination to create a large magnitude of M1 variability in numerous metric parameters in the onion variety " Pusa Red." Although vast, the variability was not random and was favourably skewed. Seeds treated with gamma rays generated taller plants, larger bulbs, and torpedo-shaped bulbs. Because the genotypic variance, heritability, achieved and expected genetic advance values are relatively high for these treatments as compared to others, the differences in bulb weight and shape generated by EMS treatments and physical + chemical treatments are of genetic consequence. In the M1 generation, plants, many unusual morphological types, partially and completely sterile phenotypes, and viviparous types were discovered.
