Mother to Child Transmission of Infectious Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: An Intriguing Case

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is one of the most common causes of acute renal failure in infants, although it occurs in newborns only rarely. Microangiopathic hemolytic anaemia, non-immune thrombocytopenia, and renal failure make up the triad. The majority of atypical cases of HUS in newborns are caused by mutations in the complement pathway or cobalamin C deficiencies. Infection-related HUS in newborns, on the other hand, has been identified infrequently. For HUS caused by infection For example, diarrhoea is not always present when Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC) is present, and some cases associated with urinary tract infection (UTI) have been reported. We present the case of a female newborn who contracted HUS after catching it from her mother, who had UTI-related HUS.
