MORPHOLOGICAL VARIATIONS IN CULTIVATED STYLOSANTHES SPECIES | BIONATURE

A study was carried out on several morphologically diagnostic characteristics that remained constant under typical farm circumstances. Stylosanthes guyanensis, S. humilis, S. erecta, and S. fruticosa were the species used. To supplement the field data, further observations were obtained using greenhouse plants. Leaves, crop height, flowers, pods, seeds, roots, and nodule quantity all showed morphological differences. The most effective species was S. guyanensis, which had the highest dry matter yield and a reasonably high crude protein value (compare 52, 156, 269 and 191 gm for dry matter yield per plant and 14.4, 10.7, 15.7 and 12.0 percent for S. erecta, S. humilis, S. guyanensis and S. fruticosa respectively). From the earliest phases of growth and development to complete maturity, morphological variances were found. These differences were used to create an identification key. The findings were then addressed in terms of how they may be applied at the farm level to guarantee that the right species were procured.
