MENTAL ABNORMALITY AND SOMATIC MUTATION – A HYPOTHESIS | BIONATURE

Many newborns are born with mental or neurological impairments that are suggestive of a genetic aetiology, yet there is no family history to support a genetic cause. Many of these situations are thought to be explained by somatic mutation in its broadest meaning. The fact that boys have a higher prevalence than girls is due to the fact that mutations in their single X chromosome are more likely to be expressed phenotypically, whereas such expression would be far rarer in girls.
