Maternal Mortality in India to achieve the Goal of MDG, 2000 | Asian Journal of Sociological Researc

According to the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of the United Nations (UN) and other international agencies in the year 2000, India aimed to reach a goal of 109 maternal deaths due to childbirth and puerperium per 100,000 live births (MMR) by 2015. After several developing nations, including India, failed to meet the MDG target after a decade, a new attempt was made in the form of the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals), which were accepted at a mega summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. While prescribing their 1,000-day timeframe in 2012, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in the United States noted that India's MCH situation was problematic. The IFPRI's scientists and experts agreed that boosting nutrition during the important 1,000-day window is one of the best investments for long-term progress in the health and development of India's children and mothers. Their advice was not only for India, but for global health and prosperity as well. The Global Nutrition Report 2017 (the first report was released in November 2017) presented in Milan, Italy, clearly demonstrates the poor nutritional status of Indian mothers, with 51% suffering from anaemia and 22% being overweight, in addition to the situation of many other countries on a global scale. With so many remarks from many international bodies regarding the poor state of India's mother and child, the current author attempts to analyse simply the nutritional component of mother to find the explanation for the high maternal mortality. The author has already investigated many contributing aspects using multivariate statistical analysis ().

Since the government of India (GOI), a signatory to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), has attempted to attain the goal by providing inputs to its huge number of geographically placed states, which are divided into various categories. During the period 2011-2013, India's MMR dropped to only 167. Using a linear trend from the previous period's growth, the present author calculated the same at roughly 150 in 2015, the MDG's target year. In 2018, it was predicted to be 140.
