KARYOTYPE AND BANDING PATTERN STUDY IN AN INDIAN MICROCHIROPTERA, MEGADERMA LYRA LYRA GEOFFROY .....
Karyomorphology and C-, G-banding pattern analysis of Megaderma lyra lyra Geoflroy chromosomes were performed. The diploid number 54 has been found, with the chromosome equations n = 14m +12sm+Ist/t and NF = 107 for male, n = 14m +12sm + 1st and NF = 108 for female, with relative percentage lengths ranging from 5:23 0.48 to 2.07 0. 17 for autosomes, 5:08 0.99 for the X, and 0.05 0.01 for the Y. A comparison of the karyotype and chromosome banding patterns with that of previous reports on the same species collected from different geographical regions revealed significant differences in the fine structure of chromosomes, the amount of heterochromatin, and the distribution pattern of G-bands, which could be attributed to variation among different allopatric populations of the same species. Unlike other bats, the existence of a relatively high level of constitutive heterochromatin with a distinct pattern of distribution has been identified. The putative roles of pericentric inversion and extraneous heterochromatin addition in the evolution of its karyotype and speciation in the Megadermatidae family have been examined.
