KAROLOGICAL STUDIES ON SEVEN SPECIES OF SCARABAEIDAE (COLEOPTERA) | BIONATURE

Karyological studies were conducted on seven scarab species, including Aphodius moestus F. and Aphodius sp. from the Aphodiinae subfamily, and Onitis falcatus Wulf, O. subopacus Arrow, Oniticellus pallipes (F), O. pallens Ol., and Onthophagus quadridentatus F. from the Coprinae subfamily. The species all have the modal polyphagan karyotype 2n = 20 (9AA+XYp). The mean chiasma frequency per nucleus was highest in O. falcatus (18.0) and lowest in Aphodius species (9.20). In different species, the number of spermatozoa per bundle ranged from 64 to 128. The karyotypic features, chromosome behaviour during cell division, and spermatozoa per bundle have all been discussed.
