J. B. S. HALDANE AS A PIONEER OF MODERN HUMAN GENETICS | BIONATURE

J. B. S. Haldane (1892-1964) was a scientist who was passionate in physiology, biochemistry, and genetics. He was also one of the forefathers of modern human genetics. Three parts of his work will be mostly discussed:1) He was the first to calculate the human mutation rate.

2) Much of his research focused on natural selection. Among other fundamental ideas, it is proposed that the genetic makeup of modern human populations has been formed by selection benefits and disadvantages in relation to historical infectious diseases.

3) He made major contributions to the development of procedures for establishing linkage in humans. He was a big friend of India, spending the latter years of his life there, learning about Indian culture, and teaching many Indian scientists.
