ISOETES FUCHSIL : A NEW ISOETES FROM INDIA

Plants of the aquatic weed quillwort from central India (Madhya Pradesh) are described as having hitherto unknown characteristics on megaspores. Apart from enormous spherical tubercles, about 10% of megaspores have spiny outgrowths (s) on a pyramidal area at the proximal face extending in a broader perispore. Some megaspores have single huge tubercles with a centrally situated "nipple" like projection, whereas others have a depression or pit on the tubercle that is identically placed. Apart from these characteristics, I. fuchsiisp. nov is solely comparable to I. pantii and I. tuberculata. In root tip mitosis, I. fuchsii has 2n=60 chromosomes.
