IMPACT OF TOURISM AND HUMAN INTERFERENCE ON PTERIDOPHYTE – DIVERSITY IN SIKKIM, INDIA | BIONATURE

Sikkim is a small hilly state in the Eastern Himalayas that is home to several ecological hotspots. Ferns and fern allies grow abundantly in this state. It attracts travellers from all over the world due to its geographical location and visual beauty. Pteridophytes are being depleted at an alarming rate due to the influence of a huge number of tourists, a lack of well-organized tourist guide's organisation, pollution caused by many causes, and human involvement. To preserve pteridophyte diversity, some conservational measures must be implemented, such as scientific development of ecotourism, construction of pteridophyte sanctuaries through in situ conservation of pteridophyte-rich places, and ex situ conservation using biotechnological approaches. Furthermore, broad awareness of the need of biodiversity conservation among locals and visitors must be reinforced on a regular basis.
