Illustrating Literacy Materials for Endangered Languages: Ethical Dilemmas and Artistic Trials .....

The creation and distribution of literacy materials is critical to the survival of fragile languages, as more than half of the world's languages lack writing systems and literacy materials totally. This article assesses the Visualizing Languages interdisciplinary joint project, which focuses on four communities in South and Southeast Asia for whom literacy materials were generated through a university art educational programme. Linguists, student illustrators, an artist mentor, and community people were all involved in the project. This multidisciplinary team worked with native speakers to create multilingual children's books that depict key traditional narratives, with each story complemented by vivid drawings that reflect the community's cultural heritage. The goal of this paper is to explain and analyse the workflow in the hopes of serving as a model for other teams looking to preserve intangible cultural property in a similar way.
