Field Studies on the Millet Head Miner Heliocheilus albipunctella (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a Pest..

The results of field investigations conducted in Kordofan State (Sudan) on the millet head miner, Heliocheilus albipunctella (DE JOANNIS, 1925), which is a serious pest of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. BR), are described in this work. The data showed that the moths appeared in the field earlier in August, on 14/8/93, and disappeared from the field earlier in September, on 18/9/93, at the on-station, El-Obeid location. Moths first appeared on August 23, 1993, and then vanished on October 4, 1993, in the Abu Zabad area. During August and September, the number of moths gathered by the light trap at Abu Zabad was substantially higher (P 0.01) than that collected at El-Obeid (on-station) during the same months. In the laboratory, H. albipunctella moths emerged from diapausing pupae in August, i.e. between August 26 and September 1. After that time, no moths appeared in the laboratory. When compared to loose semi-compact heads, the results showed that compact heads supported substantially fewer tunnels (P 0.01).
