FEMALE MEIOSIS IN EARIAS VITTELLA (FABR.) (NOCTUIDAE : LEPIDOPTERA) MAY BE ACHIASMATIC ! | BIONATURE

In females of Earias vitiella (fabr.) the behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis was investigated (Noctuidae, Lepidoptera) The number of haploid chromosomes is 31. All bivalents are homomorphic, with no discernible sex chromosomes. All bivalents stay non-homologously attached by telomeres throughout prophase, frou pachytene, and pro-metaphase, producing a single multibranched chain. As a result of the disappearance of non-homologous connections, all bivalents become free and arrange themselves on the metaphase plate. They have a distinct reductional divide. There are no diplotene structures. As a result, the meiosis seems to be achiasmatic.
