EVALUATION OF PHYTOTOXIC AND CYTOTOXIC POTENTIALS OF SOME FERNS | BIONATURE

Studies of fern cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity may reveal critical mechanisms for fern defence against predators and competitive plants. Pollen germination and seed germination bioassays were used to assess the cytotoxic and phytotoxic effects of extracts from seven fern species. All of these organisms had inhibitory effects in some way. One of the reasons for ferns' dominance in vegetation in the places where they thrive could be their phytotoxic effects. Ferns' cytotoxic properties could be useful in the future development of anticancer medicines. Bioassay for pollen germination Catharanthus roseus was shown to be a quick and easy way to screen for cytotoxicity, similar to the traditional garlic root tip meristem cells test.
