Epidemiology of Goat Nematode Infections in Different Ecological Regions of Argentina´S Northwest

The aim of this research was to learn more about the aetiology and epidemiology of goat gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in the Arid Valleys and Canyons (AVC), Tempered Valleys (TV), and Semiarid Chaco (SC) regions of northwestern Argentina. The faeces of 35 to 40 goats per flock (a total of 420 goats) were sampled every 30-40 days in ten flocks. Individual eggs per gramme of faeces (epg) were measured, as well as faeces cultures. The Kruskal–Wallis non-parametric test was used to compare differences between epg. The epg of the three regions followed the same pattern: an increase from February to the highest average epg peak in April-May, followed by a decline as summer approached. The TV region's goat flocks had the highest epg values compared to the other two regions, which had low epg values. The most common nematode genera found in the three regions were Haemonchus sp. and Trichostrongylus spp., though Teladorsagia, Oesophagostomum, Nematodirus, Trichuris, Skrjabinema, and Strongyloides were also found in smaller numbers. These findings indicate that GIN is a limiting factor for caprine development in the TV, but only during crucial periods and under certain breeding systems in other regions.
