Endovascular Stenting for Arterial Injury in Trauma: A Case Report | Asian Journal of Medical Case R

Endovascular procedures using a covered stent for vascular injuries are becoming more popular. The technique was originally used in 1991 to treat a subclavian artery damage using a balloon-expandable intraluminal graft. Because the axillary artery is shielded in the thoracic inlet, it is seldom involved in trauma; yet, damage can result in considerable morbidity and even death in patients. Surgical exploration and repair of the axillary artery is a difficult task for surgeons, with the risk of iatrogenic harm to neurovascular bundles and other nearby tissues. These problematic anatomic areas can be addressed using endovascular techniques. We acquired consent and describe a young man's severe proximal axillary artery damage, which was effectively treated with endovascular stenting.
