EFFECTS OF FUNGICIDES USED BEFORE PLANTATIONS ON YIELDS AND DISEASES OF RICE IN SOUTH EASTERN ......

Drechslera oryzae-caused brown leaf patches and Curvularia lunata-caused kernel discolouration are severe restrictions in rice production in Nigeria. As a result, the effects of preplanting fungicides and rice cultivars on these diseases were studied. A randomised complete block design experiment was used to conduct the research. Thiram, Benlate, Dithane M.45, Chinoin Fundozol, and Agrocit were applied at recommended rates of 30 gm/100 kg seed, 2 gm/kg seed, 3 gm/kg seed, 2 gm/kg Seed, and 2 gm/kg Seed to three rice varieties: BG 90-2, ITA 306, and IR 1416 before planting. According to the data on disease severity, rice seeds treated with these fungicides generated leaves with significantly (P0.05) less brown leaf spots than the control. In the instance of kernel discoloration, the same was true. While there was no significant difference in varietal response to brown leaf spots disease (P > 0.05), the rice variety BG 90-2 produced seeds with considerably higher kernel darkening (P 0.05) than ITA 306. Thiram treatment of IR 1416 and BG 90-2 rice seeds resulted in the largest mean number of panicles per stand (21.10 and 22.45, respectively). In comparison, when ITA 306 seeds were treated with the same Thiram, the minimum mean number of panicles per stand was 11.20. Although rice seeds treated with Agrocit produced more paddy (2.07 tons/ha) than seeds treated with the other fungicides, rice seeds treated with Dithane M-45 produced the highest paddy quality (i.e. 1000 seed weight) of 24.88 gm/plant.
