Effect of Polysaccharides on Filterability during Refined Sugar Manufacture | Asian Journal of Resea
During the 2019 working season, researchers at Delta Sugar Company, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt, and the Food Science Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Minia University investigated the impact of raw sugar polysaccharides such as starch and dextran on filter efficiency.
The results showed that both raw sugar starch and dextran or polysaccharides caused low filterability when dissolved in water to extract the molasses layer, causing problems in the refined sugar process and raising the process cost. Whether a refinery uses pressure filtration with inert filter aids, phosphoric acid-lime defection, or carbonation is critical in the refinery. The different filtering qualities of raw sugar were recognised as having economic value early on, and several studies were performed to determine the cause of variation in raw sugar filtration rates. Furthermore, it was discovered that dextran had a greater influence on filterability than starch.
