EFFECT OF POLYAMINES AND THEIR BIOSYNTHETIC INHIBITORS ON THE GROWTH OF HELMINTHOSPORIUM TURCICUM...

The impact of polyamines and their biosynthesis inhibitors on Helminthosporium turcicum growth was investigated. When added to Czapek medium, putrescine (0.01 to 0.5 mM), spermidine (0.01 to 1.0 mM), and spermine (0.01 to 0.5 mM) enhanced fungal mycelial growth compared to control. Higher quantities of these polyaminies were found to be fatal to the fungus's development. At a dosage of 5.0 mM, both DFMO and DFMA effectively suppressed mycelial growth. The inhibitory effect of DFMA was stronger than the effect of DFMO. At 1.0 mM each, the combined effect of DFMO and DFMA on mycelial development was more evident than DFMO alone at 1.0 mM. At 1.0 mM concentration, the combined impact was still less than DFMA alone. The combination of 0.1 and 0.5 mM putrescine with 1.0 and 5.0 mM DFMO, respectively, increased mycelial growth in reversal studies. The inhibitory impact of DFMA on mycelial growth was reversed by mixing 0.5 and 1.0 mM putrescine with 1.0 mM and 5.0 mM DFMA, respectively.
