EFFECT OF PAPAIN ON GERMINATION AND GROWTH OF ROOT AND SHOOT SYSTEM IN BENGAL GRAM (CICER ARIETINUM)

The effects of six different dosages of papain on germination and root/shoot system growth were examined in Bengal gramme (Cicer arietinum) seeds for one week. Papain was dissolved in regular tap water and solutions of 0.005, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 percent were made. Germination was found to be normal in 0.005, 0.01 and 0.025 papain solutions, just as it was in the control set. The seeds germinated on the third day at the other doses, such as 0.1 and 0.2 percent solutions. The root and shoot lengths were found to be greater in the 0.005, 0.01 and 0.025 percent solutions than in the control.
