EFFECT OF MULCHING MATERIAL AND IRRIGATION FREQUENCY ON YIELD AND ROOT-GALL NEMATODE DISEASE OF ....

During the 2009 and 2010 dry seasons, yield and root-gall nematode disease in Okra were assessed as a function of mulching material and watering frequency (January to April). The experiment was set up as a 3 X 4 factorial with 4 replications in a randomised complete block design. Meloidogyne incognita, an okra variety especially vulnerable to root-gall nematode, was sown at 0.3 X 0.3m in an Ultisol naturally infested by the worm. The use of black polythene mulch with 12 hourly irrigation greatly reduced root-gall nematode disease and increased Okra yields over the course of two years (pods). Plants mulched with palm bunch debris or no mulching material and irrigated 24 or 36 hours per day suffered the most nematode damage and yielded the fewest pods.
