Economic Impact of Wild Animal Conflict on Agricultural Sector- A Study in Wayanad District.....

Conflicts between humans and wild animals have existed for as long as people and wild animals have shared the same territory and resources. Development operations encroach on the forest, invade wildlife's privacy, and ultimately lead to survival struggle between humans and wildlife. Human-animal conflict has increased significantly in recent years, with negative consequences for humans' social, economic, and cultural well-being, wildlife conservation, and the environment. Wild animals often inflict crop and property damage, as well as killing livestock and hurting humans, resulting in man-animal conflict. As a result, conflicts between animals and humans endanger livelihoods and result in the loss of many lives, both human and wildlife. The main causes of wild animal attacks are deforestation, population growth, and competition for a similar resource base. The goal of the study is to determine the nature, extent, and economic impact of man-animal conflict on the agricultural sector, as well as the efficacy of government attempts to address the issue. The study was conducted in Thirunelli, Wayanad district's most vulnerable panchayath, and found that the economic loss caused by wild animal attacks is very high in the area, and that the loss is not adequately compensated by the government authorities due to administrative and technical issues in determining the loss. Similarly, the government's and farmers' preventative efforts have been proven to be ineffectual in mitigating the problem. Farmers were forced to shift from agricultural to non-agricultural jobs because the mitigation and compensation programmes did not benefit them.
