Meiotic studies were conducted on 47 Avena fatua L. populations from North West India. With x=7, all of the populations are hexaploid (2n=42). The occurrence of bridges and laggards at anaphases and telophases, as well as non-oriented bivalents at the equatorial plate in Metaphase, are the most common meiotic anomalies. In a few groups, other, less prevalent meiotic anomalies such as cytomixis, chromosomal stickiness, and the presence of interbivalent linkages are also present. Pollen sterility is caused by meiotic abnormalities, although there is no link between these abnormalities and pollen sterility.
