CYTOGENETIC ASSESSMENT IN PERIPHERAL BLOOD LYMPHOCYTES AFTER IN VIVO METHYL ISOCYANATE EXPOSURE ON..

The goal of this research was to determine the extent of chromosomal aberrations (CAs), sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs), and cell cycle kinetics in PBLs cultured in the presence of BrdUrd, in Vivo Methyl isocyanate (MIC) exposure from an overheated storage tank at Union Carbide, an agricultural chemical plant in Bhopal.

Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes grown from MIC-exposed survivors in Bhopal showed neither increased SCE frequencies or inhibition of cell cycle, despite a modest rise in CA.

MIC is not nearly as genotoxic as PBLS in this investigation, despite its apparent cellular toxicity and ability to change chromosome shape.
