CYTOGENETIC AFFINITIES BETWEEN POPULATIONS OF AEDES (STEGOMYIA) ALBOPICTUS (SKUSE) | BIONATURE

The cytogenetic linkages between two Indian strains of Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (from Pune and Chandigarh) were determined using a multidimensional approach. There were no premating or postmating barriers between these strains, according to experimental hybridization investigations. Fertilities and sex ratios in reciprocal crosses and backcrosses were normal. These two strains shared the same karyotype. Meiotic investigations revealed paracentric inversion polymorphism in the m-chromosome of the two sexchromosomes (Mm) in the PUNE strain, but not in the CHANDIGARH strain. Strains had chiasmata frequencies ranging from 3.490.10 to 3.70.10, and interstrain hybrids had chiasmata frequencies ranging from 3.470.04 to 3.610.007. Based on these findings, these two Ae. albopictus strains appeared to be genetically quite similar, indicating that they are conspecific populations of the same species.
