CRANIOFACIAL MALFORMATIONS, GROWTH DELAY, PSYCHOMOTOR RETARDATION IN TWO UNRELATED INFANTS BORN TO..

The researchers looked at two unrelated children who were born to moms who had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and were given 1400 mg of prednisone during pregnancy. Low birthweight, respiratory distress, growth delay, brachycephaly, broad forehead, hypoplasic face, ocular hypertelorism, telecantus, severely depressed nasal bridge, short bulbous nose, anteverted and short nostrils, broad philtrum, micrognathia, low set and displastic cars, and hypoplastic nails were all present since birth. Early infancy was marked by psychomotor impairment and repeated pulmonary infections.

Prednisone's teratogenic effects in human newborns could be represented by the pattern of deformities seen in the individuals described below.
