In Rhipicephalus sanguineus Laterelle, karyotype, sex determination, and meiosis were investigated. Males and females had diploid numbers of 21 and 22, respectively, indicating an XO: XX type sex determination mechanism. All chromosomes are acrocentric, and the complement's sex chromosomes are the largest. Both sexes of the species have been shown to have polyploid cells, but subdiploid and hyperdiploid numbers are also prevalent.
