CHROMOSOMAL SCREENING ON FARM ANIMALS I. PRELIMINARY REPORT ON SHEEP AND COW | BIONATURE

Animals on the farm Sheep (Ovis aries 2n=54; Slovak Merino Breed) and cattle (Bos taurus 2n=60; Cross Breed Holstein-Friesion) were tested to see if their respective breeds were cytogenetically suitable for future breeding. We've seen chromosomal abnormalities in both sheep and cows. Sheep with chromatid deletions have dicentric chromosomes and premature centromeric divisions, in addition to acrocentric fusions. These are signs of infertility. Similarly, the cow genome is marked by a high prevalence of Robertsonian translocations involving chromosomal 1/29, X chromosome variations (Metacentric/Submetacentric), and centric fusions, which result in aneusomatic counts of 2n = 58-59, rather than 2n=60.
