Axillary Application of Urea and Identification of Hidden Nitrogen Deficiency in Green Dwarf Coconut
The dwarf coconut palm suffers from a nitrogen deficiency, which necessitates replacement. The goal of this study was to see how different concentrations of urea solution affected the green dwarf coconut tree's leaf axils, as well as how the chlorophyll metre could be used to estimate the levels of N associated with a hidden deficiency of this ingredient. At 0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 days, urea concentrations of 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, and 240 g L-1 were applied to the axillae of leaves 8 and 9 of the coconut tree (100 mL in each leaf). At 180 and 255 days after the start of the applications, leaf N analyses were performed. At 255 days, 20 central leaflets were collected between leaves 9 and 14 (for a total of 70 samples) and seven different green colour intensities were chosen, ranging from extreme green to yellow. The chlorophyll metre (SPAD-502) was used to measure the concentrations of chlorophyll, carotenoids, and nitrogen in the leaflets. The results showed that the urea concentrations did not exceed the essential N level in the coconut tree leaves. There were no phytotoxic effects at the urea application site, but there was a decrease in the number of coconut tree reproductive structures at concentrations above 125 g L-1.Readings between 41 and 72.8 on a chlorophyll metre suggest that the nitrogen content is below the critical stage, and the chlorophyll metre can be used to diagnose secret deficiency.
