A Study of the Degree of Openness of University Digital Repositories in Sudan
The aim of university institutional repositories around the world is to give everybody free and instant access to their collections of various types of knowledge resources and scholarly writings. Different resources, on the other hand, are subject to a variety of limitations, making it impossible for these repositories to render their resources available to all users. In this regard, intellectual property and copyright laws play a significant role. This study examines Sudan's four largest university repositories in order to evaluate their access policies and procedures, as well as the degree of transparency in each repository.Using the case study process, the study took a descriptive theoretical approach. Semistructured interviews with repository managers were conducted, as well as data from the Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) and the websites of the repositories under research. The study found that many of the repositories examined may not negotiate explicitly with publishers to resolve copyright problems, and repositories can allow faculty members and researchers to share their research work under open access licences like the Creative Commons licences.
