A NEW LINE OF CHROMOSOMAL EVOLUTION IN ISOETES | BIONATURE
A novel line of chromosomal evolution has been proposed based on plants that have multiples of n = 12 chromosomes. The occurrence of chromosomal fission at an early stage of evolution has been hypothesised as a probable genesis of this sequence of 12, in addition to n = 10 and n = 11. The role of chromosomes with enough heterochromatin in this mechanism is well understood.
I. muricata has been discovered in Bhopal, India, where it lives amid damp grassy rocks similar to those seen in Australia. 2n = 60 chromosomes were found in root tip mitosis, which is a new count for this species. I. pantii contains three cytotypes with chromosome numbers of 2n=24 (15%), 2n = 36 (60%), and 2n = 48 (25%). Another species that looks a lot like I. pantii has 2n = 72 chromosomes.
