ECO-PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES ON STOMATAL REGULATION IN SOME SPECIES OF AMARANTHACEAE AND COMPOSITAE

Abstracts

Stomatal responses were studied in isolated epidermis of Amaranthus spinosus L., A. viridis L., Alternanthera sessilis R.Br. (Amaranthaceae); Synedrella modiflora Gaertn., and Eclipta prostrata L. (Compositae) incubated in different concentrations of KCl, NaCl and sucrose. Influx of K+ ions caused a change in the opening with consequent dis appearance of starch in the guard cells. The nature of the incubating solutions was found to exert a considerable influence on the regulation of opening. Solutions of similar osmotic potentials but containing different ions behaved dissimilarly.
